He was slightly taken aback when I asked to picture him. But helpful all the same. A wry smile curled from his lip. The wit of the man was clear to any who met him. But Dennis O'Driscoll, Irish poet, essayist and civil servant, died on Christmas Eve, aged 58. According to press reports Dennis had been ill for some time, but only the closest to him knew, and his death remains sudden, shocking and deeply saddening all the same.
As tributes pour in from the Irish literary world, a few lines from one of his poems 'Synopsis' have been repeated. As befitting the man, we'll leave you with this:
'Life passes at a breakneck rate,
brisk as text messages,
time only for the executive summary'
